ALL NEW every care has gone into building the cottages with your health, and that of the environment, in mind. Our values extended to wanting to ensure that what we would like in a place to say was provided for you, too.
With that in mind, we chose to insulate the cottages with wool insulation rather than fibre-glass. The latter, if freed of its environment is toxic when breathed in, for any tradesmen or women working on the job and also for anyone staying here if strands escape through venting.
Timber floors Tasmanian Blackwood, Eucalyptus, which has been oiled and treated with non-toxic Bona products to keep its natural sheen rather than joined together with toxic glues. More expensive? Yes – but worth it.
Sofas made in New Zealand, except for the middle cottage which has a chair there while the New Zealand-made sofa is repaired.
Curtains a natural linen fabric and the shutters and blinds are wooden.
TAPS We have done our best to choose taps that ensure that there is little leaching of minerals into your drinking water.
TILES from Italy and/or Spain - countries we trust in tile-making.
BATHROBES supplied by Baksana, made in Europe; with quality we trust. These are available for your use during your stay. If you would like to purchase a set, please let us know, but the ones in your room remain the property of the cottage.
LOCAL TIMBER we have done away with the box mattress, preferring to allow air to circulate beneath a latex mattress with natural padding. The mattresses and the beds are made in New Zealand – and as well as being natural and made of 100% timber, it means we are supporting local industry, too.
BAKSANA SHEETS – They are of the highest quality possible. They do not claim to be organic but they do verify that they are made in Europe with no nasties and no harmful substances to human beings or the environment. They carry the Oeko-Tex confidence in textiles trademark approval showing they have been tested for harmful substances.
PILLOWS two of the standard pillows are made of non-allergenic latex, while the other two standard pillows, and the duvet, are made in Europe. Why? Because when we discovered that geese and ducks are plucked for their feathers while still alive in some parts of the manufacturing world, we preferred to pay extra to ensure you received a good sleep at night without cruelty to the animals that supplied the feathers for your duvet and pillows, so, they are also from Baksana – made in Europe.
LINEN on your bed will possibly look unironed. This is because we prefer to do the laundry at the farm where the water is pure and without chemicals. There doesn't seem to be much point in providing you with marvellous bedlinen and then packing it off to a commercial laundromat to be cleaned with chemicals. On a fine day, the sheets on your bed will have been dried outside; just as your grandmother used to do.
